The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Critical Lack of Obesity Jabs

Less than one in 10 people who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial guidance on the medications.

Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

According to projections, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with thorough and continuous treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to broad access to the jabs that can help people shift substantial body mass, explains the organization.

Despite the current most optimistic case, the production of these medications might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline encourages governments and firms to increase availability, via measures including licensing agreements.

A patent on a key compound – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Work

The injections replicate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so individuals consume fewer calories.

People typically see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may put most of the weight back on within a year of stopping the medication, as their normal food cravings return.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your chance for contracting medical conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight impacts people in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
