Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
